Oh Joo Chiat! –

Oh Joo Chiat!

Once knew as the seaside bungalows district or the place where wealthy Chinese and Europeans would find their home in Asia, the East Coast district changed when Mr. Chew Joo Chiat came in to this space and modified its soul forever.
Joo Chiat was renamed after this penniless men who made it big in this town and that invested himself into the neighborhood social dynamics, by giving money to the poor, screening movies and inviting others to his home in Tembeling Road.

Named the first ‘heritage town’ in 2011, Joo Chiat keeps the kampong charm while opening itself to the modern yet creative souls that live or visit the area.

12 artists will lead the way at this No Man’s Land to discuss about what characterizes this neighborhood, what it represents to different people, its mythos, history, memory, values and pockets of land that belong to nobody.

In a different way, it’s almost like if Chew Joo Chiat was opening his house again to everyone and welcoming you to the neighborhood.

“Lovers quarrel, signboards stolen, lines drawn, territories marked but always in flux – Joo Chiat’s story is impossible. Not new, not old, not Tiong Bahru. It defies you. Wander through shophouses, back alleys, secret gardens, and even a hotel.”
