2 days in Bangkok: the city that has it all

While staying in Bangkok can be either hectic, touristic or a pure treat of total indulgence, there is to each his own. Magnificent temples, Jim Thompson’s house, yes the city has it all. Yet, here below is another version of a lovely getaway in a city that rimes not only with sex, drinking and boxing, but also with refined gastronomy, pampering and local flavours…

Day 1:

Whether it is your first visit of the city or not, why not start the trip with a boat ride along the river? Board on the BTS or BRT, free-of-charge boat service (make a reservation: +66 2 206 6999), alight at Saphan Taksin station and head to the pier.

If you wish to pamper yourself and visit a little jewel boutique hotel, then book in advance the private boat of The Siam and enjoy a lovely 30-minute ride before walking through this unique heritage boutique hotel. The place belongs to a Thai-American couple with immense taste and a beautiful art collection displayed along the alleys and public spaces. If you feel like a light lunch then why not enjoy a delicious fresh seafood salad (420THB) or a light soup at Chon Thai restaurant?

And if you are curious and daring enough, you might want to try and have peak at the gym to check out the beautiful black & white Thai boxing ring!

On the way back, another half hour ride will take you back to the BTS station. From there, why not opt for a little massage session? Two options are suggested: a unique one called Perception Blind Massage, which is a stylish yet affordable (around 350THB) massage parlour where only blind therapists operate in a miraculous gifted way. Thai massage, foot massage, and aromatherapy massages are offered in a dark interior design, inspired by the disability of the therapists, while still making you feel comfortable and serene.

On the first floor of the same house, Dexter is a lovely café serving light fares and coffee for those wishing to take some time off reading or just relaxing.

For massage addicts looking for another more premium experience, the hot stone massage (90-minute Deep Re-charge) at Away Spa located just a block away will definitely invite them to sink even more into relaxation. Pick a color for the room’s ambiance and let all muscles on the back and neck be taken care of, relaxed, stretched and stimulated.

And if you still have a bit of energy after this, why not walk a few minutes away and check out the H Gallery on Silom Road, a charming house hosting the artwork of both Thai and Asian artists.

In the evening, time has come to indulge in a gourmet Thai dining experience at Nahm: elected Asia’s best restaurant in 2014, this unique destination is well known by local and world foodies. David Thompson has it all: the inspiration, the authenticity and the ingredients. Start with a selection of canapés (pork and lobster with shredded ginger and Thai citron, blue swimmer crab with peanuts & pickled garlic on rice cakes, prawn & coconut wafers with pickled ginger), continue by sharing local inspired delights such as a beautiful kingfish salad with pomelo, lemongrass & lime (600THB), a flavorful coconut and chicken soup (320THB), an amazing duck curry with banana peppers (690THB) or a just-as-perfect stir-fried wagyu beef with charred onions, oyster sauce and Thai basil (730THB).

End the journey with either a traditional mango sticky rice (350THB) or a unique delicate yet audacious combination called Marian Plum in scented syrup presented with Thai cupcakes and dried shallots: a fantastic sweet & salty experience! Last but not least at Nahm, the cocktail addicts will die for the Thai Sabai (330THB) showcasing Thai whisky or the signature Tom Yumtini (330THB) of the house.

Day 2:

After a relaxing morning or a trip to Siam Centre to check out the latest trends of the local Thai fashion (building located on top of Pull & Bear offering an array of boutiques showcasing unique creations made by local designers), why not choose a perfect flavorful destination for an authentic Thai lunch? Bo.lan will be the one.

Bolan Outdoor Lounge

In the kitchen, a young talented Thai-Australian couple revisits local cuisine, giving it a beautiful refined twist. Located at the end of a tiny alley, in an absolutely lovely wooden house facing a pool, the place is as inspiring as inviting. The set lunch priced 980 THB offers a selection of 4 dishes to be picked from a list, and a dessert. Definitely go for the stir-fried prawns with paddy oat leaves, the salad of ocean prawn with Mea Klong Samphire, and the soup of pineapple and organic chicken, all this served with wild brown or white rice.

After this timeless stopover, head to La Maison des arts for a bit of shopping: stainless steel cutlery, tableware and designed accessories, all is made in the utmost Thai tradition in this family-run business operating since 1975.

In the evening, if gourmet dining with a view is your thing, then opt either for Eat Sight Story facing the illuminated temple of Dawn or for the amazing setting of Scarlett located on the 37th floor.

Dining at Scarlett will enable you to indulge in a selection of lovely tapas (nice French cheeses, cured hams, marinated salmon and octopus) and sumptuous cocktails (go for the “G” effect or the “don’t miss me”, 330THB). For mains, the lobster Cesar salad (690THB), or the lobster-foie gras ravioli with emulsion of porcinis (690THB) will definitely convince you. End up this treat with some chocolate profiteroles or flush it down with a few more designers’ cocktails from the Playground bar downstairs, while enjoying a game of fuss ball. And after that, if you are not too tired, why not explore more shopping at night at the famous Chatuchak market or at Talaat Rod Fai market for anything you might need: shoes, sunglasses, sheets or fairy light, yes they have it all and even more…
